Ayurvedic winter remedies

A pure organic blend of three Indian spices - ginger, pippali, black pepperPukka Herb’s Trikatu is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy which has a natural affinity for the lungs and orifices of the head making it a superb natural treatment for winter colds. Its hot, digestive properties help to clear mucous, coughs and breathing difficulties as well as treating the symptoms of asthma, bronchitis and allergic rhinitis.

Amla (Emblica officinalis) is a powerful anti-oxidant and immunity builder - one of nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants due to its high Vitamin C content, this nourishing fruit is clinically proven to boost immunity with long-term use. It also cleans the liver and protects the heart by reducing LDL cholesterol.

These two herbal remedies make a great double-act for treating and preventing winter ailments. Take Trikatu whenever there is mucous and phlegm and, once these are cleared, use Amla to build immunity and prevent future ailments. Check out Pukka Herbs online for information and ordering.

Bounce Back from Fatigue and Flu

As stress becomes a more and more common condition of the 21st century – being the cause of up to 70% of doctors visits and costing the UK economy £7 billion a year - so does the incidence of fatigue. When we take into account the stresses and pace of everyday living, rest and relaxation isn’t the easiest of things to find time for.

Unfortunately life rarely slows down, so we have to keep up! Bio-Strath is a Swiss Herbal Yeast Elixir which is clinically proven to restore lost vitality when tired, run down or recovering from illness, and has been shown to increase resistance to infection and strengthen the immune system.

Dislike swallowing pills or capsules?

Sucking Zinc lozenges in the first few hours of a cold can bring quick relief according to a recent medical study.

This study involved a group of 73 young adults with cold symptoms. When the volunteers were given the zinc lozenges within 24 hours of the cold symptoms starting, a decrease in the cold's duration from an average of 10 days in the dummy group to just over 4 days in the zinc group was recorded.

Sucking a zinc lozenge can soothe sore throats and relieve cold symptoms and are ideal for children or anyone who hates to swallow pills or capsules. Solgar's zinc lozenges are suitable for vegetarians, salt and starch free, and come in a pleasant lemon-lime flavour. Available from Victoria Health, Solgar's Flavo-Zinc lozenges cost £5.99 for 100 lozenges.

Stop the cold count with garlic

The common cold is the world’s most widespread viral infection, with most people suffering approximately two to five colds per year. Thanks to its natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, garlic has been used throughout the world to strengthen the immune system and to maintain and promote health. Supplementing your diet with Kwai Garlic tablets can give your immune system the boost it needs this winter, with no risk of overdosing or drowsiness.

If you can’t stomach the taste of raw garlic, or hate the ‘garlic breath’ that inevitably follows, Kwai is an odourless and convenient alternative to eating fresh garlic. The tablets are coated 60 times so your breath stays fresh. A daily dose of 300mg provides the equivalent of just over a clove of fresh garlic, and is the effective dosage level at which most research studies have been carried out.

Kwai Original 100mg is available in packs of 100 for £4.95 and Kwai Once-A-Day 300mg is available in packs of 30 tablets for £4.95 from all good health food stores or by mail order on 01628 533307. For further information, visit Lichtwer Pharma online.

Could flying make you ill?

Ventilation systems in newer aeroplanes recycle as much as 50% of the cabin air. According to Harvard University health scientist, Professor John Spengler, the risk of infection from other passengers on long flights is far higher than in any other indoor environment. The possibility of catching an illness such as coughs, colds or flu from recycled germs is bad enough - aeroplane travel is also dehydrating resulting in dry, flaky, irritated skin.

Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic and preventative against infections. Acting as a catalyst it disables the enzyme that one-celled bacteria, viruses and fungi need for their oxygen metabolism. They suffocate without harm to human enzymes or parts of the body chemistry. The result is the destruction of disease causing enzymes in the body.

Liquid Silver Spray is refreshing, antibacterial, hydrates the skin and seals in moisture. Available from The Sher System, Liquid Silver Spray costs £12.00 for 50ml, or £30.00 for 200ml.

Important Role for Collagen in Managing Joint Disease

Exciting new research suggests a significant role for collagen hydrolysate in the prevention and treatment of degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a non-inflammatory disorder of the joints which, over time, leads to wearing away and destruction of cartilage. In spite of extensive research there is still no cure to osteoarthritis and degenerative joint diseases are becoming more widespread. In the UK alone, 8 million people have arthritis, of which osteoarthritis is the most common.

Collagen hydrolysate is important as a dietary supplement particularly in patients with osteoarthritis or in people whose joints are put under heavy stress such as sportsmen/women or people who are overweight. The recommended daily dose is 10 grams.

Collagen Plus is a unique nutritional supplement, taken as a daily drink, which provides Collagen Hydrolysate, Glucosamine Sulphate, and Chondroitin Sulphate at their optimum levels in order to help the formation of joint cartilage. Collagen Plus is available from Arthrovite.
