Supplement close up: Natural Vitamin C

Information courtesy of Xynergy Health Products

Camu Camu berries are the richest, naturally occurring source of vitamin C, and are wildcrafted in the Amazon rainforests. Amla berries are wildcrafted in Himalayan valleys and are considered to be the most revered and regenerative herb in Ayurvedic medicine.

Human beings have either lost or never acquired the ability to synthesize vitamin C, neither can it be stored in the body in appreciable amounts, therefore it is essential to take it in supplement form. It is the main antioxidant found in body fluids, protecting cells from free radicals - chemicals produced during normal metabolism.

Nutritional Features of Natural Vitamin C:
- contains a safe source of ascorbic acid, which is essential for the synthesis of collagen, a major structural protein in the body.
- contains flavanoids, including quercetin, hersperidin, anthocyanins, proanthocyanins, rutin
- Camu Camu berries contain up to 30 to 60 times the amount of vitamin C found in citrus fruits
- contains high levels of beta-carotene, calcium, iron, leucine, niocin, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, serine, thiamine and valine.

Benefits of Natural Vitamin C:
- easily assimilated into the body
- antioxidant
- helps to regenerate Vitamin E, another antioxidant
- anti-viral
- antibacterial
- helps immune cells develop properly
- involved with the metabolism of stress hormones
- natural antihistamine
- helps to increase the absorption of iron
- increase vitamin C may decrease the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
- can help to prevent the formation of cataracts and glaucoma
- protects you from the common cold and bronchitis
- protects against gum disease
- strengthens the blood vessels
- improves male fertility
- can help to lower cholesterol
- particularly recommended for smokers, as they require extra vitamin C.
- those with the highest intake of vitamin C seem least likely to develop certain cancers
- can help to break down gallstones in women
- vital for healthy growth and repair of all tissues, including bone, and thus can reduce the development of osteoporosis

Aircast Ankle Brace

Soft tissue injuries account for 80% of all sports injuries in adults, and 24% in children, with the most frequently affected age group 15-40 year olds. It is a very common injury at Accident and Emergency making up 10-15% of all consultations. Incorrect treatment can lead to disability and eventual osteo-arthritis.

Aircast - one of the leading manufacturers of orthopaedic devices has developed the Airsport Ankle Brace, to help the sportsperson or chronic sufferer of ankle sprains. Aircast began in the early 1970’s after American Glenn Johnson suffered a segmental tibial fracture while skiing. After months in a plaster cast and on the verge of a non-union, Mr Johnson, with no prior orthopaedic training, recognised the problems, and developed the first off-the-shelf below knee cast, the Aircast. To the surprise of his surgeon, who was convinced that a bone graft was necessary, Glenn’s delayed union healed. From its beginning, Aircast pioneered the functional care of orthopaedic injuries.

The Airsport Ankle Brace is easy to use. It slips on over the sock and under the shoe and comes in three different sizes. As with all Aircast products the Airsport Ankle Brace is latex-free. Benefits of the Ankle Brace are its semi-rigid, encased shell that offers proven Air-Stirrup support, and the foam-filled aircell that cushions and supports the ankle with the integral forefoot and the shin wraps providing compression, which enhances proprioception. Mr John B. King, Honourary Consultant in Orthopaedics at the Royal London Hospital said, "Anything that allows tissues to heal in their normal active environment, is a boon to patients and surgeons alike."

The Airsport Ankle Brace is available by mail order - free phone number: 0800 1697735 at £45.50 incl VAT and p&p. For further information visit www.aircast.co.uk.

Brain Bio Centre

The Brain Bio Centre is an outpatient clinical treatment centre, specialising in the 'optimum nutrition' approach to mental health problems. The centre offers a comprehensive assessment of biochemical imbalances that can contribute to mental health problems, plus advice to correct these imbalances as a means to restore health. The Brain Bio Centre is the clinical division of the Mental Health Project. The Clinic is located at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, founded by Patrick Holford in 1984.

The Brain Bio Centre works with any person who has a mental health concern. A wide variety of mental health problems have been helped through the optimum nutrition approach. These include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ‘brain fog’, fatigue, learning difficulties, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, dementia, and Alzheimer's
disease.

As a treatment centre of excellence, patients are accepted on the basis of being willing to have a thorough mental health and biochemical assessment and to follow
through with nutritional management under medical supervision, over a minimum of a six month period.

Tests consist of Biochemical screening through blood, urine and hair samples, may include:
- Food allergies using quantitative ELISA IgG analysis
- Mineral imbalances using hair and blood mineral analysis
- Pyroluria using urinary reagent analysis
- Neurotransmitter imbalances using blood platelet determinations of serotonin, noradrenalin, histamine and plasma acetylcholine
- Homocysteine imbalance using blood plasma
- Essential fatty acids using red blood cells
- Urinary peptides using urine analysis

Further tests to investigate specific issues may also be recommended where appropriate. Psychometric screening involves straightforward questionnaires, completed prior to the first consultation.

The cost of the programme will vary from patient to patient, depending on the tests, consultations and nutritional supplements required. Over several months, most patients spend between £600 to £1100 on consultations and tests, plus between £2 and £3 per day for supplements. The supplement programme varies from person to person and is
reassessed and adjusted as the patient progresses.

The Brain Bio Centre is located at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) in London. To arrange an appointment for a consultation at the Brain Bio Centre, visit www.brainbiocentre.com or call 020 8871 9261.

What's Hot! - Healthy Oils

Essential Fatty acids have been succesfully used to treat an amazing variety of complaints, including skin conditions, asthma, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, aggression, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, Huntington's chorea, PMS, menopausal symptoms, hormonal imbalance, eating disorders and inflammatory conditions. DHA is also an essential nutrient during pre-conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding to boost brain development in the growing babies. A hot topic at the moment, reflected by the increase of research into the potential effects of essential fatty acid deficiency and the results of dietary supplementation of oils.

RECENT & CURRENT RESEARCH
Breast Cancer protection
Following the recent results from a scientific study by Dr Javier Menendez and colleagues at Northwestern University, USA, demonstrating that evening primrose oil provides a powerful weapon against aggressive forms of breast cancer, further research has revealed that VegEPA, containing a purer form of GLA, offers even greater protection against breast cancer.

GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), is an important omega-6 fatty acid contained in evening primrose oil and acts on the same breast tumour receptor as the new anti-cancer drug Herceptin. Most evening primrose oil preparations contain refined oil but the evening primrose oil in VegEPA is unrefined, virgin, cold-pressed oil. According to Professor Basant Puri, world-leading authority on natural fatty acids, and a medical Professor and Consultant at Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College London; "This means that, in addition to containing GLA, VegEPA is also a rich source of triterpines. These compounds work synergistically with GLA to mop up free radicals, boosting the body's white blood cells fight against cancer."

Furthermore, VegEPA is an excellent source of ultra-pure EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid that has also been found to have anti-cancer properties. Last month, Dr Takahiro Eitsuka and colleagues at Tohoku University and Teikyo University, Japan, found that EPA inhibits the action of an enzyme, telomerase, which has been implicated in many cancers. EPA helps to prevent cancer cells from dividing, causing the cells to die, thereby stopping the disease in its tracks.

With such a rich source of EPA, GLA and triterpines, taking at least two capsules of VegEPA daily may help prevent many forms of cancer. Women should also check their breasts regularly and see their GP if they detect any changes. Evening primrose oil also has other beneficial effects on the breasts for example helping to reduce the painful swelling that can occur each month as part of premenstrual syndrome.

Concentration, brain development and behaviour in children
With school meals once again under the spotlight, the role of oily fish as a fundamental part of children’s diets has finally been given the recognition it deserves. The announcement by Education Secretary Ruth Kelly that minimum nutritional standards for school meals will soon be introduced, and the recent launch of ‘Eating Well at School: Nutritional and Practical Guidelines’ by the Catherine Walker Trust, has placed the role of nutrition in schools at the front of people’s minds.

Efamol supports the move to improve standards of nutrition for all children and has welcomed the much needed recommendations that schools should serve children at least one portion of oily fish each week. Peter Clough, technical director at Efamol comments: "These new guidelines are long overdue and a very welcome addition to the recent commentary on standards of nutrition in schools. There has been a lot of focus on the sugary and fatty foods that children shouldn’t be eating but we also need to concentrate on nutrient rich foods that children need regularly to keep their bodies and minds healthy."

Recent recommendations made by the Catherine Walker Trust confirm that oily fish has been recognised as vital for good nutrition and should be as integral to our children’s diets in the same way as fruit and vegetables. Independent nutritionist, Ursula Arens comments: "The omega-3 essential fatty acids found in oily fish such as fresh tuna, salmon, trout or mackerel should be an essential part of our diet. They offer many health benefits, and play an important role in brain and eye development and function.

"Children should eat at least one portion of oily fish per week; more would be better, so even with the new recommendations for school meals it is important that parents provide their children with further opportunities to eat oily fish at home. Children don’t always like the strong tastes of oily fish, which is why a fish oil supplement can provide a convenient way to ensure your child receives the vital omega-3 fatty acids for good health."

Wild Berry Blast flavour Efalex Chewies provide an excellent source of the important omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), Arachidonic acid (AA), and Gamma Linolenic acid (GLA) in a tasty one a day capsule. Taken every day they provide the nutrients needed to help support brain and eye function including learning ability, concentration and co-ordination.

Prison Project to combat aggression
A new trial in Holland is about to investigate what effects essential fatty acids may have on people with anti-social behaviour. Set to be the largest study of its kind, the Dutch research will examine the effects of nutritional supplements on aggressive behaviour among 500 prisoners aged 18-24 years old in the Dutch prison system. The trial is one of the measures to meet the challenge of growing aggression among Dutch prisoners.

Participants in the study will be given a specially developed blend of fish oil provided by Efamol and Efamol Pure Evening Primrose Oil, which together will provide a unique combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The research will be led by Mr Ap Zaalberg, project manager at the Dutch prison system, and a team of scientists from Radboud University. The trial is a development of a previous British study in 2002 by Gesch et al that studied 231 young offenders taking a similar omega-3 and omega-6 formulation to what will be used in the new Dutch study.

Results of the British study showed that compared to baseline, those taking active supplements (Efamol Marine, now known as Efamarine) for a minimum of two weeks committed an average of 35.1% fewer offences. The trial concluded that anti-social behaviour in prisons, including violence, is reduced by vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. It is suggested that similar benefits could be found in the wider community where diets are poor.

Are missing fats the cause of Eating Disorders?
Australian paediatrician, Dr Michael Kohn is embarking on the first study to scrutinise the role of essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fats, on teenage girls with anorexia nervosa. The investigation examines if supplementation of these fats could help to treat people with the eating disorder and whether a lack of the essential fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), could be a cause of the illness.

A symptom of anorexia, in addition to physical weight loss, is a deterioration of cognitive function and mental agility. Current remedial diets ensure weight gain but full recovery of mental ability is rarely seen. By supplementing adolescent’s diets with Efalex, Dr Kohn hopes to find out whether this fatty acid supplement will result in improved cognitive function. It may also demonstrate clinical effectiveness in reducing mood depression.

Dr Kohn explains: "60% of the brain is made up of fatty acids and when a person becomes malnourished their brain volume can decrease by up to 30%. This can have serious consequences. Malnutrition affects the patient’s belief system and can lock them into the eating disorder. By supplementing the diet with Efalex we hope to replete the brain structure and help the patient to think rationally again."

Interestingly Dr Kohn suggests that anorexia could be a genetic predisposition and could be connected to the expectant mother’s diet. Dr Kohn comments: "If the mother's diet is deficient of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA which is needed to help maintain brain and eye function, the baby is born with decreased levels of this fatty acid. It has been noted that family groups and clusters tend to suffer from this eating disorder and this could be a contributory reason as to why." Further support of the importance of DHA can be seen in infant formula milk where DHA is added in order to ensure optimum nutritional supply.

Efalex is a dietary supplement made by Efamol. For more information, Efamol's customer helpline number is: 0870 6060128 or visit www.efamol.com or www.efalex.co.uk.

Chocolate
First of all - the good news is that you may not have to give up this vice, just make a few clever adjustments. Nutritionists and doctors alike are beginning to think that chocolate may in fact be good for your health - not just any old chocolate bar, mind. Dark chocolate produced using minimal processing and with a high cocoa content (preferably 60% or higher) is rich in antioxidant polyphenols, which assist in the metabolism of glucose and blood pressure regulation - not to mention the anti-ageing benefits! Of course organic chocolate is even better...

Naked Chocolate
Chocolate grows on trees! All chocolate comes from cacao beans - the seeds of the cacao fruit, which grows on a jungle tree. Cacao beans taste like dark chocolate, because they are dark chocolate! In this book, David Wolfe and Shazzie introduce the phenomenal, enlightening power of cacao beans engulfed in the magic of chocolate. Naked Chocolate contains over 60 original, enticing, mouthwatering chocolate recipes. Order your copy from www.shazzie.com. RRP £14.99.

You can also order raw cacao nibs, already peeled and kibbled, which are very easy to pour into smoothies and other delights. This is raw, no agro-chemicals, wild, chocolate! You can turn cravings for cooked chocolate into super-nutrition. All chocolate is made from the cacao bean, one of nature’s most fantastic superfoods due to its wide array of unique properties - many of which are destroyed or corrupted by cooking. 100g raw, peeled cacao nibs costs £4.62 from www.detoxyourworld.com.

Healthy Vegan chocolate bars
Regarded by many as eccentric, Plamil’s vegan founder Arthur Ling was the UK pioneer of bio fuel, soya milk and pea protein. He was also the original vegan Willy Wonka of dairy free alternatives for milk chocolate. He died earlier this year aged 86 (though he looked twenty years younger). Arthur’s son Adrian Ling is keeping the Plamil innovative tradition alive with a new range of nutrition rich magic chocolate having liased with top London nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston.

"Yvonne asked if we could create a magic version of our famous dairy free chocolate that she could happily recommend, with no sugar, lower carb, higher protein and perhaps some essential fats, but still retain the delicious flavour of chocolate. Having found a source of birch tree sugar alternative that has a very low Glycaemic Index (GI/GL) value we then added high protein hulled hempseed to add in omega, 3, 6 and 9 and subtle nutty flavour," says Adrian proudly.

A delighted Yvonne tells us "Plamil really are the Willy Wonkas of healthy chocolate - this really is guilt free with all the health benefits and none of the drawbacks of sugar or artificial sweeteners - at last we really can have our cake and eat it! Despite Xylitol’s awful chemical sounding name, the health benefits of this sweetener, discovered in Finland during the war, are abundantly backed up by 50 years of research. It’s not only good for your teeth but evidence shows it may be good for your bones too."

The new Plamil magic 60% cocoa, no added sugar chocolate hit the shelves on World Vegan Day (November 1st, 2005) and is available from all good health shops at RRP of £1.69 or online from www.plamilfoods.co.uk.

Caffeine
It may seem like a contradiction - but it is possible to use stimulants such as caffeine without causing exhaustion or the mood problems associated with excessive caffeine use. Caffeine is the most popular drug on the planet, and the use of caffeinated beverages to 'keep us going' is not new. For many thousands of years, various teas and infusions have been used to sustain energy levels - and also as a tonic for the mind. Buddhist monks in India use black tea to fuel debate and help them through long hours of prayer and meditation. Artists too, have always fuelled the creative process with carefully timed brews of Coffee or Green tea.

Despite this, most of our associations with caffeine these days tend to be quite negative. The popularity and overuse of extremely potent caffeine supplements and drinks have given the very concept of using a stimulant negative connotations to many of us, and many health writers and alternative practitioners often recommend completely eliminating these things from our diet. Is this really necessary?

The answer as with so many things in life is moderation. Small amounts of caffeine can uplift and invigorate - and various studies - including fascinating new research conducted at Suffolk University in this country, have shown the psychoactive properties to be genuinely beneficial if delivered in the correct amounts.

Many popular drinks contain around 50-80mg of caffeine per can - and this is delivered in to the body extremely quickly. This provides a temporary caffeine 'kick' as the body reels from the release of huge amounts of carbohydrates into the blood, followed by the all to familiar slump in energy a few minutes later. This is not the way Buddhist monks use caffeine - nor is it the way most South Americans keep alert and energised.

Yerba Maté - A way out of the caffeine trap
In South America - the 'national drink' is also a caffeinated leaf tea called Yerba Maté, which is consumed by millions of people across the continent. Like Green tea - Yerba Maté is a source a caffeine - but a dose of 1g of Yerba Maté only provides 25-40mg of caffeine, as part of a complex of actives - enough to combat fatigue without the negative side effects associated with excessive caffeine use.

A single cup of Yerba Maté may also provide around 20mg of the important anti-stress mineral magnesium, as well as significant levels of many of the B-complex vitamins and many amino acids. It is thought that the assimilation of all of these nutrients with the caffeine accounts for somewhat contradictory benefits of this herb - it can reduce fatigue, increase energy and boost metabolism and also has been shown to improve sleep, digestion and to balance blood sugar levels.

Hugely popular with slimmers, Yerba Maté is also an extremely good alternative to tea or coffee - and new research shows it is also more effective as an antioxidant than Red wine or Green tea. Like Green tea, Yerba Maté contains high levels of group of antioxidants called polyphenols, but Yerba Maté is far richer - containing around twice the levels of these important antioxidants.

Rio Amazon Yerba Maté is available from Rio Health Direct priced at £5.99 for 40 teabags from www.riohealth.co.uk
