March Online Newsletter – Issue 26
whatreallyworks.co.uk

March has been a very busy month in the UK, with loads of interesting health charity events from Brain awareness week through to abseiling grandparents as part of the March "Older People" theme for Year of the Volunteer. It is fantastic to have so many reasons for communities to really join together supporting and encouraging one another.

The big health event we at What Really Works love to celebrate is National Veggie Month. This year Animal Aid worked with celebrity chef Dan Green to produce a glossy recipe booklet called The Greatest, Healthiest, Tastiest, Veggie Recipes Ever! Get your free copy by phoning 01732 354032, or emailing info@animalaid.org.uk.

For those of you considering the switch to a vegetarian diet, or even if you are already vegetarian and find yourself stuck for answers when someone asks you WHY GO VEGGIE? Check out Animal Aid's 8 Good Reasons to go Veggie. Or, even better, sign up online for their Veggie starter pack - full of information on nutrition, recipe ideas, and shopping tips.

If that got your mouth watering, then you will also want to visit our Vitality Cookbook section for a range of healthy recipes from Susan Clark's Vitality Cookbook - and it doesn't end there! Vardit Kohn has been adding tasty recipes to her Nutrition Zone articles so that you can eat your way to good health.

One final word - we have been putting together a list of current resources for our website so that you, our readers, have instant access to the individuals and groups that you are looking for. Thank you so much to all those of you who have already sent in information, this is greatly appreciated. For those of you who wish to help, please send an email to resources@whatreallyworks.co.uk with information on non-profit organisations, practitioner and therapy associations, support networks and the like.

    National Bed Month: 1st - 31st March

March is National Bed Month - where we not only stop to think about what we are sleeping on, but also how well we are sleeping. A good night's sleep is paramount to optimum health, not least because it helps maintain internal balance.

How well we sleep affects everything from our fertility levels to how rapidly the effects of ageing appear. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, good sleeping habits boost the immune system, and are crucial in the management of Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Behavioural disorders, and intestinal problems.

    What's not! - Ovarian Cancer

The month of March brings with it a joint Ovarian Cancer Awareness Campaign, led by the two national charities, WellBeing of Women and Ovarian Cancer Action (HHMT).

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about ovarian cancer while generating funds for much-needed research. Around 7,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year - and with only a 30% survival rate (breast cancer survival is around 70%), more research is vital in order to help understand, diagnose, treat and prevent this silent disease.

Request your free Ovarian Cancer leaflet by emailing info@ovarian.org.uk or send an A5 SAE marked "Ovarian Cancer" to WellBeing of Women, 27 Sussex Place, Regent's Park, London, NW1 4SP.
