We are just over halfway through the year already, and 2005 looks set to be the year for making huge positive lifestyle changes - with complementary medicine becoming more and more popular, and a focus on nutrition for all ages.

A number of initiatives have been set up, including celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's push for healthy food choices in schools www.feedmebetter.com and the upcoming Brain Power tour - a theatre show visiting schools across the country during the summer term. The show is designed to teach children at primary school level all about the importance of eating a balanced diet and how certain foods can aid concentration in the classroom. Contact Efalex on 0870 6060128 or e-mail info@efamol.com for a free wall chart or guide to healthy eating.

Next month one of the hot topics is gut health, with Gut Week taking place 18th-24th July. Check out www.gutweek.org.uk for a wide range of information and activities designed to teach and entertain. Susan Clark's factsheet Dysbiosis gives an indication as to why digestive disorders are the second most common reason for absenteeism.

So if you are long overdue for your seasonal MOT - now is a great time to make changes for better health from the inside out!

Information courtesy of Xynergy Health Products

Klamath Lake algae is a blue green algae that grows in the mineral-rich volcanic bed of Lake Klamath in Oregon, USA. This deeply nourishing superfood contains peptide molecules that act as precursors to two important brain foods: glycogen and neuropeptides, both of which help enhance mental clarity.

Nutritional Features:
  • provides a highly bio-available protein, 58% of which is assimilated by the body (compared to meat protein which is 20% assimilated)
  • contains optimal amino acid content
  • is one of the most concentrated sources of chlorophyll, a valuable phytonutrient
  • contains phycocyanin, the pigment responsible for the blue-green colour of this algae and an inhibitor of COX-2, the enzyme responsible for inflammation
  • provides one of the most balanced and complete sources of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, nucleic acids, essential fatty acids, phytonutrients and antioxidants
  • especially high in beta-carotene, vitamin A and iron
  • provides the only known vegetarian source of vitamin B12
  • Used to enhance mental clarity, assist with cell regeneration, blood purification and detoxification, Klamath Lake algae can also help to strengthen the immune system, aid weight loss and soothe the digestive system. Begin by taking 1-2 capsules a day, building up gradually to 2-6 capsules per day. Try Pure Klamath Crystals from The Synergy Company, available from Xynergy Health Products on 08456 585858.

What's Hot! - Plant extracts could defeat MRSA

Scientists at Rio de Janiero University researching the efficacy of traditional Brazilian healing plants concluded that two natural naphthoquinones found in Pau d'Arco - known to the Incas as the Tree of Life - could offer a new strategy for treating MRSA.

MRSA - methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus - strains that cannot now be treated with this once commonly used antibiotic, are responsible for many of the hospital acquired infections that are currently causing serious public concern in Britain.

For thousands of years before the discovery of antibiotics the peoples of South America used infusions of Pau D'Arco heartwood to protect themselves against infections and to maintain health and vigour. Modern laboratory tests have confirmed that the Incas' sacred plant contains some twenty ingredients that are effective against a wide range of common fungal, bacterial and viral infections.

Pau D'Arco is already used by many people in Britain as a herbal remedy against Candida and various viral infections, but it is now suggested it could offer people about to go into hospital some added protection against the latest generation of superbugs.

Rio Trading Pau d'Arco is available from The Nutri Centre at £15.99 for 120 x 2500mg vegicaps, or £5.99 for 40 teabags. To order call 0800 587 2290, or visit the Nutri Centre online.
