Spring is finally here! Our team has been hibernating over the winter, working hard behind the scenes to implement changes that will make navigating our site and finding just what you are looking for even easier. Keep your questions and suggestions coming - as ever, we value your input because this is your site too!

Our main focus this month has been Mothers and Babies, as March not only brings National Mother and Baby week (26-31 March) but of course March 26th is Mothers' Day. So we have put together a very special newsletter celebrating both Mothers and little ones - hoping that you will find ideas and inspiration to share with family and friends. And for those of you embarking on the parenthood journey - whether it be for the first time or the fourth time - check out our four new book reviews on the homepage.

No idea what to get Mum for Mothers' Day? We have tried and tested products for every kind of mum, uncovered interesting news and research, and found fabulous new websites. When in doubt, a little bit of pampering goes a long way...

What’s new in our zones

Nutrition Zone
Vardit Kohn not only investigates why we are constantly bombarded with conflicting messages about what to feed our children - she also provides a wealth of information on how you can successfully implement healthy changes in her latest article, Feeding the kids - What really works.

Life-Coaching Zone
Carole Railton
looks at how we can establish our own unique branding and use it across all areas of our lives in her brand new article, Personal Branding. She also provides us with essential pointers on how to spring clean with a difference in her seasonal article, Clean up your vocabulary.

Schools will be banned from selling junk food in moves to tackle child obesity. Parents will also be issued with guidelines on food high in fat and sugar which should not be included in their children's packed lunches. Nuts, seeds and yoghurt drinks will replace crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks in tuck shops, after-school clubs and vending machines, say the draft guidelines issued earlier this month by the government-appointed School Food Trust (SFT).

Fish oils and good nutrition should be tried before medication
A US regulatory recommendation that stimulant medication should carry a high-level warning that it may increase the risk of death from heart attacks amongst hyperactive children has again shown that simple natural methods, such as omega-3 fish oil supplementation, are a more suitable therapy for ADHD. Sally Bunday MBE, the founder of the Hyperactive Children's Support Group (www.hacsg.org.uk), said she was very concerned by the accounts that 51 children and adults in the US, and nine children in the UK, had died from sudden cardiac arrest while on the class of drugs, known as methylphenidates.

Health visitors back "eat organic" call to pregnant mums
Most health visitors believe mums should eat organic while pregnant, according to NEW research from Hipp Organic. In the nationally representative poll, 58% agreed that during pregnancy the unborn baby can benefit from the mother eating organically; 23% were undecided; and only 19% disagreed. These findings support another poll, commissioned for Hipp by market research company BMRB, which showed that 71% of mums and mums-to-be believe it is important for pregnant women to eat organically.

Rich Hippie perfumes
Rich Hippie perfumes are taking the market by storm thanks to their 100 percent natural and chemical-free formulation. If you're already into your organic food, your weekly yoga work-outs and your all-natural skincare, then isn't it time you re-thought your signature scent too?

Rich Hippie perfumes are made using the traditional methods employed by perfumers before the advent of the chemical industry, using only the finest organic and wild-crafted ingredients. Most modern perfumes are created using synthetic flower and plant extracts but we now know that this process can be hazardous to your health and harmful to the environment. Many synthetic chemicals have been linked to 'hormone disrupters' which are thought to promote cancer growth. Some synthetic perfumes use petroleum too, which not only is a non-renewable resource but it is refined using harmful chemicals and additives that may cause cancer.

The complete range of fragrances includes 12 scents for women and three unisex perfumes - to see the full range, log on to www.rich-hippie.com. Prices start from £60 and the products are available from:

PREGNANT MUMS & NEWBORN TREATS

Rio Rosa Mosqueta Oil for mothers and babies
Rio Rosa Mosqueta is an Andean wild Rose (rosa aff.rubiginosa) which has been a beauty secret of Chilean women for literally hundreds of years. The rosehips of this unique flower of the Rose family are high in Essential Fatty Acids of both the Omega 3 and Omega 6 groups. These Essential Fatty acids are needed to produce hormone like substances called Prostaglandins that are used in the repair of skin tissue. The oil is also rich in trans-retinoic acid, a component of vitamin A that is also crucial for skin repair.

The combination of these factors makes the oil a potent tool in the repair and maintenance of healthy skin. Rio Rosa Mosqueta can help to attenuate the marks left by scarring - and it is ideal for getting rid of stretchmarks - making it a great gift for young mothers. For this purpose, it is best used topically over a period of about three months, during which time a gradual improvement should be seen.

Because Rio Rosa Mosqueta is completely free from additives it is safe for use on babies and young children. The oil should never be used on broken skin, but for dry patches and healed areas it can be very helpful. Always do a test patch on your child when introducing a new skin care product. Simply put a drop on the back of the hand and leave for 24hrs - but, unlike many cosmetic skincare products - Rio Rosa Mosqueta is extremely unlikely to cause irritation even in individuals with highly sensitive skin.

Yin Yang ZSB6 cream
Karolina Weir, mother of two healthy babies, successfully used Yin Yang's ZSB6 cream to heal her two caesarean scars and prevent the appearance of stretch marks.

Yin Yang's ZSB6 cream is made from plant-derived collagen, obtained from organic Soya. The collagen is carefully treated to remove the legume inhibitor, which makes the bean indigestible. This soft natural treatment makes the amino acids naturally available to the skin in a gentle, mildly acidic form that is specifically designed to aid the regular skin cell renewal on a three- to four-weekly cycle.

Apart from the natural advantages of plant-derived collagen, Yin Yang's ZSB6 cream is fortified with essential traces of zinc, selenium and vitamin B6, which combine as strong antioxidants and also replace important vitamins and minerals which are particularly in demand during pregnancy and when a woman is under stress.

JUST FOR KIDS

Indigo Essences
Ann Callaghan and her two nephews, Ben & Mica, have developed the most wonderful range of 12 essences specifically to address the issues facing some of our children today. While they are combinations for kids, they certainly work just as well on grown-ups, pets, and houseplants too! Made in Ireland from crystals, this is a range that is truly exceptional - a perfect combination of fun and effective healing.

As with any vibrational essence, Indigo essences work on the deeper emotional level - so they get straight to the heart of the matter. It is worth noting that there is brandy in the essences (to prevent bacterial growth), however you can also apply them externally, add a few drops to the bathwater, or simply have your child keep the bottle close until they are feeling ready to move on. The essences also come as sprays (with added essential oils, so they smell divine) which are lovely when sprayed around yourself or the room.

The home site for Indigo Essences is also designed for all ages, and is fun to explore - check it out for yourself at www.indigoessences.com. You can mail order the essences in the UK from Ainsworth's Homeopathic Pharmacy (www.ainsworths.com; 0207 935 5330) or AristiA (www.aristia.co.uk; 02392 355 645). Universal Essences run workshops on how to use this and other ranges - visit www.universalessences.com or phone 0870 0620 206 for more information.

Optimum Nutrition for your Child's Mind
If you want to maximise your child's potential you need to feed them the best brain food. Whether it's their first toddle on the kitchen floor or their sudden plunge into emotions and relationships as teenagers all depends on how well their brains are working. And that in turn depends, in large part on how well their brain is nourished.

To find it more about how you can maximise your child's potential check out Optimum Nutrition for your Child's Mind by Patrick Holford and Deborah Colson (Piatkus;£10.99) due to be published on March 23rd 2006. Visit www.patrickholford.com for details.

WHAT'S HOT! - A MAGAZINE FOR REAL WOMEN

Britain has an underground world of desperate women who stash away junk food and bolt it down in secret, reveals a survey in a brand new magazine, launched on the UK's news-stands at the beginning of 2006. The survey, from LighterLife magazine, exposes a community of guilt-ridden women who lie to their families about how much they eat and will even throw away food because they can't trust themselves not to eat it.

The ground-breaking 132-page weight-loss and lifestyle glossy is strictly a 'model free zone', and the first to address weight loss through the mind, rather than the plate. It commissioned BMRB to ask 1142 women, nationally representative, if they had attempted to lose weight, and 61 percent said they had. Their confessions make disturbing reading.

They reveal women who'd rather have chocolate or a takeaway than sex. Many are serial dieters, yet abandon their efforts after a week. They're an alienated, unsupported community, some of whom would rather deceive their own children than give up food.

The figures show that:

  • Almost one in five women who have attempted to lose weight have hidden food or eaten it in secret. They stash it in their car, bathroom cupboards, under their bed, and even in their children's rooms. And some resort to eating secret supplies in the bath, bathroom or the car
  • To protect their double life, women seemingly have to create a web of deceit. A quarter of dieters lie about what they have eaten, and 54 percent of these have done so to partners. One in 10 have even lied to their children. They hide the truth, says LighterLife magazine, because they're ashamed, fear a lecture, and sometimes simply because they don't want to share the food with their family
  • Many women struggle to stick to a diet. A half say their shortest diets lasted a week or even less; a fifth have dieted at least 11 times; and a quarter have thrown food away just to stop themselves eating it
  • Thirty one percent of dieting women admitted they had preferred food to sex. Of these, 50 percent would opt for chocolate, while others would prefer takeaways, crisps and cakes
  • For further information on LighterLife phone 08700 664747 or visit www.lighterlife.com

WHAT'S NOT! - CHILDREN WITH BACK PAIN

Ever wondered why pupils fidget so much, especially near the end of a long study period? The answer is probably uncomfortable, cheap chairs and tables.

For most of their forty year history, BackCare, the charity for healthier backs, has concentrated on helping back pain sufferers to regain control of their lives. Of increasing concern for some time has been the growing problem of back pain in children and young people. Surveys in many countries show that 10 to 25% of children complain of back pain in their teens. BackCare put together a team of experts who recently published a report 'Back Pain in Children and Young People: an evidence-based review of current thinking on the causation, prevention and management'.

Kerry Teakle, a BackCare Trustee and Scotland's first Body Stress Release practitioner, is encouraging anyone with an interest in our children's future to get involved. "Just two minutes of time is required to log your support for the campaign by visiting www.backcare.org.uk website and clicking on the e-card to Jacqui Smith MP, Minister of State for Schools, asking her to meet with BackCare to discuss practical solutions to this problem. In addition every time an e-card is sent, 10p will be donated to BackCare by a corporate sponsor."

Most children start with healthy backs, good posture and natural movement but they can be hurt by prolonged sitting on ill-fitting furniture and copying other people's bad habits. Discomfort causes fidgeting and affects concentration on school and home work. Lack of adequate exercise may lead to weak muscles and bones and vulnerable backs.

There is a significant body of evidence from high quality research conducted over the last 25 years that a handful of simple, practical measures need to be done to prevent and manage the epidemic of back pain in our schools. Teakle advises: "Encourage children and young adults to talk and not to suffer in silence. Seek relief for the muscular pain such as that offered by a body stress release practitioner or contact the BackCare advice line for more advice.

"Get children to keep moving and keep in shape. When sitting, stretching and wriggling their backs for 30 seconds every 30 minutes, otherwise known as the 30:30 wriggle rule, will help. Encourage them to carry their school bags, preferably a rucksack, over both shoulders and only carry what is required. And if the school has lockers, encourage them to use them. If not, lobby the school to provide some. Make sure that computer stations and games consoles are set up correctly to encourage the natural curves in the back when sitting."

With a few easy changes, the words 'sit up straight' may be a thing of the past. With good furniture it is natural.

For further information, contact: www.backcare.org.uk. Kerry Teakle, Body Stress Release practitioner, practises at Medicalternative - 0131 225 5656; www.medicalternative.com.
