Put
your best foot forward! |
It’s
hard to put your best foot forward when your feet and toes are spoiled
by blisters, corns, bunions, patches of nasty hard skin or horrid
fungal infections like athlete's
foot and, even worse, verrucas.
If you are someone who has been guilty of neglecting their feet,
it doesn’t take much effort to get them back into good shape
again.
Read Susan's article, Foot
care, to find out how to tackle athlete's foot, corns,
bunions, chilblains, toughened skin, warts, and verrucas.
Top Tip for reviving feet:
Buy yourself a tennis ball. Put the ball on the
floor and place the arch of your foot over the top of it. Now roll
the ball, with your foot, forwards and backwards. Do this for three
minutes on the right foot and then repeat with the left foot. It’s
cheaper than a foot spa or a reflexology
session and I promise you, it feels great!

Higher
levels of soya isoflavones increases bone-mass |
In one double blind, placebo-controlled study published in the
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, soya
isoflavones were shown to help women with low bone mineral
content and prevent hip fractures in postmenopausal years. In an
earlier study conducted at the University of Hong Kong,
650 pre and post-menopausal Chinese women were monitored for their
intake of phytoestrogens, such as soya. These women, whose daily
soya intake was seven times higher than their Western counterparts,
experienced significantly higher bone mineral density and a greatly
reduced risk of osteoporosis
development.
A similar study, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral
Research, measured the effect of soya isoflavone intake on
maintenance of peak bone mass in 116 pre-menopausal women over a
period of three years. Results revealed that higher dietary levels
of isoflavone phytoestrogens significantly reduced the regression
of spinal BMD.
Although the Western diet is typically low in soya, there is a
simple way to boost
phytoestrogen intake. Aria supplements
from
Lichtwer Pharma contain 50mg of concentrated
soya isoflavones (phytoestrogens), at least as
much as the average Chinese woman would eat in a day. Each tablet
also provides a number of essential nutrients to safeguard women’s
health and well being such as vitamins B, B6, B12, calcium
and folic acid.
Aria costs £12.99 for 30 One-A-Day tablets
and is available from Boots, Superdrug and health food shops nationwide.

Relief
for Raynaud's sufferers |
February is Raynaud’s
Awareness Month, and Padma 28 from Cedar
Health has been found to be very effective at relieving
the symptoms for sufferers.
Padma
28 is a herbal formulation based on a traditional Tibetan
recipe. It consists of a carefully balanced preparation of 19 dried
and milled herbs, together with natural camphor
and calcium sulphate. The ingredients are selected
according to ancient Tibetan philosophy, by taste and other criteria
specific to the Tibetan tradition. These ingredients include key
natural components such as, polyphenols, bioflavanoids
and essential oils. This formula
has powerful antioxidant effects which have been
shown to be important in maintaining healthy circulation,
especially in the legs.
Padma 28 is used on appearance of the first signs of circulatory
disorders such as tingling, formication, feeling of heaviness and
tension in the legs and arms, numbness of the hands and feet or
calf cramps. In a double-blind trial, people with intermittent claudication
received 760mg twice daily of the Tibetan herbal formula Padma 28
or a placebo for 16 weeks. The average walking distance increased
by 115% among people receiving Padma 28,
compared with a 17% increase in the placebo group. No side effects
were reported. It is also the first Tibetan herbal formulation to
be subjected to the rigours of western clinical evaluation.

A
healthy guide to feet hibernation |
Because your feet have been hidden away all winter, they become
prone to fungal
infections - which can lead to smelly feet. PediTech
is a unique and natural foot odour product, as
it has a two-step formula that attacks the cause and the odour itself.
Firstly it targets the root of the problem by killing the bacteria
and then works to guard against its return. PediTech is simply sprayed
onto each foot every day for one week to kill the bacteria, then
re-applied once or twice a week to keep feet fresh and prevent unpleasant
odour returning.
Simon Coe, a Chiropodist for Boots Footcare, said: "Feet are
often neglected, especially during the winter months, and in the
UK three out of four people suffer from foot problems at some stage
during their lives. The best way to look after your feet during
this period of hibernation is to use a good moisturiser twice a
day, especially around the heels. If you are wearing boots on a
daily basis, it’s a good idea to alternate with a second pair.
This allows
time for the footwear to air and dry out properly, thereby reducing
favourable conditions for fungal infections to thrive. Finally,
make sure you visit a chiropodist like you would a dentists twice
a year for a foot MOT".
PediTech, manufactured by Passion
For Life, costs £9.95 and comes with a money
back guarantee if the user is not completely satisfied. It is available
over the counter at major Boots stores, Superdrug and all good pharmacies.
