Message from Susan

First anniversary! It’s almost a year since the What Really Works website went live and it’s fair to say you’ve been keeping us busy with your emails and comments since then.

Don’t forget we’ve a new Message Board on the site, and I am currently organising a wide range of experts to come on site with me to answer your queries… So keep them coming, we love to hear from you!

Natural Health Events

It also occurs to me it is time to support you all at a more local level so I want to introduce a Natural Health Events calendar each month. So, if you’re involved in any health charity which has an event, if you are organising a local Health Show in your town, if you’re a publisher and have a health author on a book-signing tour, or if you are a practitioner holding an ‘Awareness’ day, give us the details, i.e. who, what, when, why and where (the five golden rules of journalism!) and we’ll help promote it.

New Zones…

In the meantime, keep an eye on the site. Future plans include the launch of a DoctorZone since we get so many queries from doctors who want to keep abreast of developments, a doctor-run CancerZone since this is such a specialist topic and an AyurvedicZone so you can tap into one of the world’s oldest and most effective healing systems.

And don’t forget we’re all live online every Monday night (UK 8pm –9pm) with a lively chat where you can bring your questions to us direct.

- Susan Clark

What Really Works has become even more interactive! Many of you will have already taken part in our lively online chats on Monday evenings - now you have the chance to post up your questions, advice and comments on our all-new Message Board.

Not only can you share information and concerns with others, the What Really Works team will be monitoring the queries, and asking our invited experts to contribute too, so everyone can benefit from this exchange.

Simply click on the Message Board link on the Homepage and register. Your feedback helps us keep our finger on the pulse of what concerns, interests or intrigues you… so let us know!

Here's Health Awards - a triple celebration for Bioforce
Bioforce is celebrating unprecedented success in this year's Here's Health
awards. The awards are voted for by readers of the UK’s Here's Health magazine, and this year Bioforce won in three different categories: the overall Award for Excellence, Best Herbal Remedy range and the Most Innovative Product. The latter was for their BioSnacky seeds - which were featured in our January 2003 newsletter.

Top Tips!

Are you a runner?

If so, you should be taking a good multi-supplement to keep your muscles and joints in good condition. For the first 15-20 minutes of a run you mostly burn up glucose and only start to burn off fats after that. To convert fats to energy the body needs a substance called acetyl-coenzyme A. Eating lots of seeds and nuts can increase levels of this nutrient to boost this conversion and so will help keep you in better shape.

Xynergy Health Products distributes a Coenzyme A supplement that provides a balanced combination of active nutritional components that can be used by the body to support its energy cycle, manufacture of connective tissue, resistance to illness and – as reported by some, an effective anti-ageing agent.

Snoring

Suffering from nights of sleep broken by a snoring partner? Or maybe you are the one keeping someone awake!
Be warned, obesity is linked with an increased risk of snoring - those with a collar size of 17in or more are likely to snore, and suffer from sleep apnea - so if you suffer, try and control your weight. Alcohol, smoking and food allergens will also make snoring worse. While laser surgery is some sort of a solution, it only works in half those patients who try it and the effects can wear off after a few years. Save your money and check out your health store instead for a natural remedy that combines peppermint, which opens up the airways, with vitamin E to help with breathing.

Neversnore, from Higher Nature– and its 40,000 regular users must know a thing or two! – is currently at a reduced price.

Sun Awareness Week: May 12th - 16th

Men with receding hairlines, bald patches, or those simply thinning on top, are particularly at risk for getting sun-related cancers on exposed skin. ScalpBloc is a non-perfumed, non-greasy and waterproof formula that protects against the sun. It forms an invisible bond with the skin and doesn’t mess up the hair. ScalpBloc is also useful for women with wide parting in their hair, and children who won't wear a hat.

BodyBloc follows the same dermatologically tested formulation as ScalpBloc and extends the same unique benefits to the protection of the whole body. One daily application gives head to toe protection for the whole day, while still allowing the skin to tan.

Remember however, that for babies and young children, their exposure to the sun for any length of time during the middle of the day should be avoided, whatever the sunscreen you use.

ScalpBloc costs £9.95 and BodyBloc £12.95 (150ml bottle). They are available by mail order from Lifes2good on 020 8870 5533.

Safe Deodorants

In the many quests for ever stronger and more effective deodorants, stronger and more powerful chemicals are being used. Some of these chemicals have now been linked to health problems (see our article on deodorants).

Green People's range of four roll-on deodorants use Zinc ricinoleate, the zinc salt of an acid extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant, together with a solution of Ammonium alum, an abundant earth mineral. Using bases of organic floral waters such as Rosemary, Lavender and Peppermint, these are available in ranges for both men and women. Used together with good basic hygiene, all of these offer safe, natural control of body odours without suppressing the vital function of perspiration.

These deodorants cost £6.49 for 75ml. For more information about this range, visit the Green People website.

Isoflavones relieve monthly breast pain

For those women for whom this is regularly a sore point, natural plant hormones isoflavones can help to relieve the pain of monthly breast pain (mastalgia), according to the results of a new double-blind randomised controlled trial.

Western diets are typically low in isoflavones - an average intake of less than 1mg/day compared to 35mg or more in Eastern populations - but it's easy to boost your intake with an isoflavone supplement, such as Aria.
Manufactured by Lichtwer Pharma, Aria contains 50mg concentrated GM-free soya isoflavones, combined with other nutrients essential for female well-being, such as calcium, vitamins B, B1, B6, B12, and folic acid.

Aria costs £12.99 for 30 One-A-Day tablets. For further information, call Lichtwer's Customer Care Line on (01803) 528668.
