Tips for kids this summer ! |
Kids need exercise to grow
Exercise is crucial for building strong bones, but it needs
to be the right kind. Football and skipping will both build strong
bones, so will walking - but swimming, which is good for stamina
and general exercise, isn’t weight-bearing and so won’t
strengthen bones. Preschoolers in particular need at least an hour
of free play every day.
So encourage your kids to get out this summer - climbing, walking,
riding bikes, running and kicking balls – all will help them
grow up strong!
Travel Sickness
Children who suffer from motion sickness often feel anxious about
it, may be restless and feel that moving around will help. In fact,
the opposite is true. Sitting still, with a neck pillow to keep
the head still to prevent the excessive movement of the inner ear
that produces the sensation of motion sickness, may help. In the
car, encourage your child to look ahead out of the window rather
than down, and use story tapes to distract them. Keep blood sugar
levels steady with regular carbohydrate snacks, and regular drinks
of water. If all else fails – a lidded plastic box, with a
sprinkling of bicarbonate of soda to absorb the smell – will
be useful for any accidents while on the move.

ScalpBloc
Gives Sun Protection during WIMBLEDON TENNIS |
Andre Agassi complained loudly about the discomfort
caused by the sun burning his exposed scalp a few years ago. A promptly
despatched bottle of ScalpBloc visibly eased
Agassi’s discomfort and gave him the sun protection he needed.
Also used by Prince Charles to protect the
royal crown, ScalpBloc is a unique SPF-20 sunscreen, specifically
formulated to protect the exposed areas of the scalp. Acting as
an ‘Invisible Sun Hat’, it bonds with
the skin and does not mess up the hair. It is also waterproof and
sweat-proof –without blocking the pores. Its non-oily, non-perfumed
formulation follows the Health Education Authority’s recommendation
for the use of a sunscreenwith at least SPF 15. One daily application
will give the necessary protection – while still allowing
for a golden tan to develop.
ScalpBloc
costs £9.95 per bottle, and is available
online and from branches of John Lewis partnership, Harrods,
Selfridges and selected chemists, or by mail order from Lifes2good
on 020 8870 5533.

Holiday
Health
from Solgar |
It’s
the time of year when many of us are looking forward to jetting
off on holiday. If you are going abroad, here are a few tips on
how to stay healthy:
You can help avoid mosquito and midge bites by
taking vitamin B1. It omits an odour through the pores,
not detectable to humans, but the insect recognises you as vegetable
rather than human. Take 300-500mg of B1 daily and a good multivitamin.
Protect
your skin from ultra-violet rays with PABA Vegicaps.
PABA, taken as a supplement, protects the skin from ultra-violet
ray damage. This is not a new discovery; PABA has been taken internally
for many years for this purpose and can be found for external use
in many sunscreen creams and lotions.
Ginger has shown to be effective in reducing travel sickness
and also helpful if nausea is the result of bad food or drink as
it reduces cold sweating and vomiting. Take with an acidophilus
supplement for best results.
Solgar’s
standardised full potency Ginger Root Extract is priced at £13.35
for 60 capsules. Solgar have a range of B1 supplements. PABA Vegicaps
550mg, are free from sugar and starch and suitable for vegans. They
cost £10.65 for 100 capsules. For more information & details
of your local stockist, check
online, or call 01442 890355.

Clinically
proven fresh sage tablets for hot flushes |
Hot flushes
are one of the most frequently experienced symptoms of the menopause,
experienced by three-quarters of menopausal women, but most receive
no treatment to ease this discomforting and embarrassing condition.
It is believed that hot flushes are caused by reduced oestrogen
production, which influences the autonomic nervous system.
Salvia or sage is one of the oldest medicinal plants and has been
used for many years by herbalists in the treatment of hot flushes.
Nature gives a clue to its use, as when the plant is in the full
sun, the leaves appear to have little drops of perspiration. Salvia
has a re-balancing effect on the hypothalamus thus correcting sweat
regulation.
Salvia is one of Bioforce’s
most popular herbs and now Menosan, an organic fresh herb extract
of Salvia officinalis, is available in convenient tablet form as
well as tincture. New Menosan tablets contain extracts of fresh
organic sage, which is processed within hours of harvesting. The
tablet manufacturing process ensures that as many as possible of
the herb’s active ingredients are preserved.
Menosan tablets and tincture are available from all good health
stores, price £8.99 for 60 tablets and £7.49 for a 50ml
bottle. For local stockists, check
online, or phone Bioforce on 01294 277344.
