What Really Works' Top Tips for January!

Post-winter boost...

Feeling sluggish after winter? Invest in a blender and make your own fat attack drink. Blend bananas, raspberries, almond butter, maple syrup, yoghurt, and acidophilus powder. This mix will help reduce bloating and promote better fat metabolism and digestion.

Winter wellness...

The B vitamins are known as nature's own stress busters and so can help prevent winter infections. Vitamin B6 is important but all the B vitamins work best when taken together - so take a good vitamin B Complex and eat more bananas, carrots, lentils, tuna, and salmon to get you through the rest of winter.

Say Again?

Some time ago there was a question about alternative treatment for epilepsy. I would like to know if you still recommend anything that might help - particularly where someone has suffered some brain damage as a result of epilepsy.
- Name and address supplied

This condition is so serious, my advice would have been to find a qualified natural health practitioner who specialises in treating it and not to embark on a DIY regimen. Go back to the site for our list of contact organisations which can make a referral.

If you were on line for a recent Monday night chat, you will have seen me talking about the potential of a supplement called GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) in helping manage this condition. This supplement is more widely used as an anti-anxiety agent but clinical trials investigating its potential in treating epilepsy were promising.

If you want it, here is the reference for an article where the potential of GABA as an anticonvulsant was explored: Treiman DM. Gabaergic mechanisms in epilepsy. Epilepsia. 2001;42(Suppl3):8-12.

About a year ago the Sunday Times 'What's the Alternative' featured a question on whether there was an appropriate supplement that a child could be given to boost their immunity system before the MMR vaccination. Unfortunately I have lost that copy of the Style section and would be grateful for your help in this matter.
- Louise Simpson

Louise, I devoted a whole chapter of my new book, What Really Works for Kids to Vaccination and the MMR debate and advised that parents who either do or don't vaccinate find a homeopathic practitioner who can help support their child's system through both options.

We have posted a lot of this information on the website but if you are interested in the book, it is a long-term investment since it covers ages 0-15. Go back to the site and check out the Kids Zone where you can read part of this section and get the names of specialists who can help.

First doctor-designed three-step supplement range

* The Trilogy range uses a unique building block mechanism that helps to increase the level of certain nutrients for those who need them - without fear of taking too much. It is a simple three-step process making things as clear as possible:

Step One : Select a vitamin and mineral formula - £7.99 for 28 tablets. Select either the Complete Adult Formula or Enhanced Adult Formula 50+ - both with antioxidants, carotenoids and isoflavones.

Step Two : Add in an essential fatty acid formula - £7.99 for 28 tablets. Select either the Evening Primrose Oil Formula (for healthy hormone balance, hair skin and nails) or Omega-3 Fish Oil Formula (for healthy heart, circulation and joints) - both with C0-Q10, wild oregano oil plus additional vitamin E for extra antioxidant protection.

Step Three : Add a specific nutrient formula - £9.99 for 28 tablets. Select Healthy Heart & Circulation, Healthy Resistance, Healthy Energy or Healthy Back & Joints dependent on the particular health need.

Dr Sarah Brewer explains: 'There's been a lot of media coverage recently about the dangers of taking too many vitamins and minerals. I have spent two years formulating the Trilogy range to overcome this problem and devised it as a three-step process that allows mixing and matching to achieve optimum health. Most people would benefit from taking a Trilogy Step One plus a Trilogy Step Two for general health maintenance. Those with a particular health need can then add in a Trilogy Step Three, depending on their individual requirements.'

The range is available from Boots. For further information contact Lichtwer Pharma.

Organic seeds for sprouting at home

* New from Bioforce is BioSnacky, a range of organic seeds for sprouting at home. There is a choice of seven organically grown and untreated seeds: Alfalfa; Little Radish; Mung Bean; Fitness Mix (radish, mung bean, wheat); Mild Aromatic Mix (lentils, mung bean, radish); Strong Aromatic Mix (mung beans, radish) and Gourmet Mix (quinoa, radish, lentils). Each has a different taste and nutritional benefits. All you need to get sprouting is a jar with a muslin cover or a BioSnacky germinator.

BioSnacky seeds are organically grown, GM free and non-irradiated to guarantee constant high quality sprouts and shoots. Fresh, crunchy sprouted seeds are an excellent source of nutrition. Sprouting releases the vitamins, minerals, enzymes and protein, providing more nutrients gram for gram than any other natural food. Sprouting partially breaks down the carbohydrates, fats and protein, increasing digestibility.

The BioSnacky range is available from health stores. The packs of seeds cost 99p each. The 3-tier Germinator costs £13.95 and the Glass Germinator is £3.99. For stockist enquiries phone 01294 277344 or visit Bioforce online.

Ultimate Defence in the Cold War

* Ester-C is a revolutionary and naturally sourced form of vitamin C and a premier antioxidant that neutralises free radicals, making them easier for the body to eliminate. It is the only patented brand that contains powerful metabolites responsible for delivering its benefits where needed. Calcium and other metabolites combine with ascorbic acid producing Ester-C, which is easier for the body to absorb and use, and minimises the potential for digestive irritation, which everyday vitamin C is known for causing.

A recent clinical trial found Ester-C significantly reduced the effects of colds and their frequency, and brought about relief in shorter periods than a placebo. Additionally, it found taking 1000mg of Ester-C (usually available in 500 or 1000mg tablets) resulted in a 25% reduction in the likelihood of catching a cold; it reduced the number of cold-infected days by 30% and; 64% of people felt generally better whilst taking Ester-C.

Country Life markets a range of four Ester-C products, including a brand new 'vegetarian capsule' version. Country Life Ester-C is available via a nationwide network of independent health food stores. For further information and your nearest stockist, contact Country Life on 0800 146215.

Help for Rosacea sufferers

* Rosacea is a common yet little recognised skin condition that affects both women and men. Some people can have it for years with only minor flare-ups; others soon get more advanced symptoms. Unfortunately, early recognition is sabotaged at the outset by innocent looking symptoms such as blushing excessively or flushing after spicy foods or an alcoholic drink. These can indicate the first signs of rosacea, yet are often misdiagnosed.

The clients who come to Sher have tried every conventional treatment without success. The system incorporates an interactive group of calming products which when used correctly will gently cleanse, soften and heal the skin. The main catalyst is gentle rinsing with temperature controlled water therapy. This part of the programme helps to flush out impurities and hydrates the skin. There are simple treatment products; a serum containing lavender oil and a lotion that is antibacterial, it calms the skin and absorbs excess oil. There is also a natural looking protective make-up for women and two factor 20 sunscreen preparations.

The most important aspect of the system is that each client is issued with a tailor-made regime. For those unable to attend a personal consultation, a mail order service is available accompanied with a teaching video. Phone 020-7499 4022 for further information, or visit the Sher website.
